Having high levels of moisture within your home can cause problems for your health and the health of your home. High humidity can lead to increase in growth of molds which can be bad for your health. A simple dehumidifier (or luftbefeuchter in Germany as I found out) can help to reduce the levels of moisture in the air.
However, if you are constantly needing to run a dehumidifier, you may need to get your home checked for structural issues. Alternatively, if you are looking for a new home, discovering any potential or existing mold problems is very important.
While searchin for a new property, you should always consider any smells within the property. Certain smells are a good indication that there is a mold problem in the house. Even if you can smell bleach, this may be a sign that the current owners are trying to remove mold using the combination of bleach and water.
Molds generally create a musty smell in the home, especially in bathrooms and any basements as these are common areas for high humidity.
A university in America is currently building a new system which would allow you to monitor the air quality in a specified area of your town. Even though this system would only work for outdoor air quality, it does give you an idea of what it’s like in the houses. Generally if the air quality outside is poor then this can often spread into the houses in the surrounding area.
Unfortunately, this system is still be tested and it would involve sensors being places in the local area. If you don’t want to wait for that, you could use a thermo-hygrometer while house hunting to monitor the air quality.
If you already have a mold problem in your home, a dehumidifier is one way to control the problem. However, if you don’t control it, the mold spores could spread around the house and damage the property. Fixing problems caused by molds can be expensive to resolve and if it’s not done, the mold can harm your health.
It’s odd though, as I was researching into this post, the foreign equivalent kept appearing. It’s strange hour the Mexican work for dehumidifiers, humidificadores, and the French word, humidificateurs, can be so similar whereas the German, luftbefeuchter, is entirely different.
