Are You Ready For Option Trading?

Stock options trading is something that everyone wants to master. And for good reason. Options magnify the returns that an investor can make on a stock. But it also comes with some risks.

If you are interested in trading options first ask yourself if you are ready. Are you ready to take on the additional risks that is involved? Before jumping in and buying options with both hands there are a few questions you should ask yourself first.

“Do you understand what they are and their risks?”

Understanding the market basics is a must before entering the market. But options are a whole other ball park. It is important to understand them as well. Stock options allow investors to create both, higher profits and higher losses.

Before trading them make sure you understand those risks and are able to control them through money management and position sizing.

“Are you making money?”

Before you invest your money into options it is wise to have some prior experience in the stock market. It should not be something to start off with, but rather something to increase your returns when you are already making money.

Remember options are powerful, but they are not the Holy Grail. They only magnafy what you make or lose now. If you lost 20% of your account in your first year of trading stocks then by switching to options you are only increasing the amount you will lose.

“Do you have a plan?”

Buying and holding options for the long term does not work. Have a strategy before you get in, that will be of big help to any trader. When do you enter? When do you exit, both when you are right and when you are wrong? These are questions you need to answer.

Most new traders will just buy a option on a stock that they heard from a friend of a friend was going to make a killing. And then they lose all their money and wonder why. Before entering make sure you actually have a plan.
